Highlighting EAP Young Investigator Award Presenter – Rosalind B. Simpson

The EAP Young Investigator Award session in Vienna (October 2024), featured outstanding presentations from promising researchers in the field of paediatrics. We are excited to spotlight the insightful research of Rosalind B. Simpson (United Kingdom), who presented during the EAP Young Investigator Award session at the EAPS Congress in Vienna. The judges faced a difficult task, given the exceptional quality of each presentation. 🏆 Quantifying Variation in the UK Availability of Neonatal Technologies: A National Survey

Rosalind B. Simpson (University of Nottingham, United Kingdom)

Understanding Neonatal Technology Gaps Across the UK

Rosalind’s research surveyed 155 out of 185 neonatal units (84% participation), including 91% of the UK’s tertiary units. The goal was to examine the availability of key technologies used in delivery rooms and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and assess how regional differences might influence care quality.

Key Findings

  • Core technologies like T-Piece ventilation and volume-targeted ventilators were available in over 95% of units.
  • Less commonly used technologies, such as near-infrared spectroscopy and respiratory function monitoring, were available in fewer than 5% of units.
  • Significant variation existed in the availability of other essential devices like video laryngoscopes and ECG monitors for delivery rooms.
  • The study identified multiple versions of key technologies in use, with variations across regions:
    • 15 different ventilator models
    • 19 types of vital sign monitors
    • 22 phototherapy units
    • 13 e-prescribing systems

Implications for Paediatric Care

Rosalind’s research highlights the potential impact of technology disparities on staff training, care continuity, and parental anxiety—especially for families whose infants are transferred between units with different equipment and practices. The findings underscore the importance of standardisation and consistent access to essential technologies to improve neonatal outcomes across the UK.
