🏆 Early Concurrent Acute Kidney Injury in Children with Severe Pneumonia is Associated with Worse In-Hospital Outcomes: A Multicentre Study

Ser Yee Soh (KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Singapore)

Exploring the Impact of Acute Kidney Injury in Severe Pneumonia

This study, conducted across 15 PICUs in 9 countries, examined the link between acute kidney injury (AKI) and outcomes in children admitted with severe pneumonia. Of the 440 patients included, 21.1% developed AKI within three days of admission, leading to significant implications for their recovery.

Key Findings

Children with AKI were found to have:

  • Twice the mortality rate compared to those without AKI (12.9% vs. 6.1%).
  • A 2.8 times higher risk of death, even after adjusting for age and severity of illness.
  • Longer PICU stays: Median of 10 days vs. 6 days.
  • Prolonged hospital stays: Median of 16 days vs. 11 days.

These findings highlight the importance of early identification and management of AKI to improve survival and reduce recovery times in children with severe pneumonia.

Advancing Paediatric Care Through Research

Ser Yee Soh’s study underscores the need for proactive monitoring and improved treatment strategies for AKI in paediatric pneumonia cases. His work adds to the growing body of research aimed at optimising outcomes for critically ill children.
