WHO urges animal antibiotic curbs
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended governments dramatically cut antibiotic use in farm animals, including a ban on their use in growth promotion.
Key recommendations include:
– a reduction in use of medically important antimicrobial in food-producing animals;
– a complete restriction of use in food-producing animals for growth promotion;
– a complete restriction of use for prophylaxis in food-producing animals with no clinical diagnosis;
– that antimicrobials classified as critically important for human medicine should not be used to treat food-producing animals.
